I Moved My Bluesky Account to Eurosky
2 minutes read •
I just moved my Bluesky account from golden-fox07.bsky.social to golden-fox07.eurosky.social. It looks like a handle change but it’s actually more than that. My whole account moved to a different server which is run by Eurosky in Europe and none of my followers had to do anything.
The reason was simple: I wanted my data in the EU. Before this, my posts sat on a Bluesky server in the US.
How I did it
I used move.eurosky.tech (they call it EU-HAUL). The steps were pretty simple:
- Sign in with your current handle and password
- Pick the server you want to move to (Eurosky by default) and choose a new handle
- Wait while it copies your posts, follows and media over
- Confirm the final step through an email from Bluesky
The whole thing took me about 20 minutes and it just worked. Nothing broke and I didn’t have to redo any steps.
You need an invite code from Eurosky first which you get by signing up on their site.
If you already use your own domain as your handle then the tool lets you keep it. I was still on .bsky.social so I got a .eurosky.social handle instead.
What actually changed
In my why I self host post I wrote about how Bluesky is built on the AT Protocol and how your identity is a DID (Decentralized Identifier) that isn’t owned by any one server. This is the first time I actually got to see it happening with my own account
Things to watch out for
- Old links stop working. My old handle isn’t in my DID document anymore, so links like
bsky.app/profile/golden-fox07.bsky.socialwon’t point to me once caches clear. (When I checked, the old handle still resolved, probably for that reason.) I still need to update the Bluesky link in this site’s footer lol. - You still use the normal Bluesky app. You just sign in with the new handle afterwards.
Honestly that was it. I was expecting something to go wrong but it was a pretty easy 20 minutes.
Next step is probably making golden-fox.tech my handle since I already own the domain.
